Red Squirrels don’t hibernate in winter but do spend a lot of time in their nests to stay warm and conserve energy. I hope this little squirrel has a cache of food to see him through the bitterly cold weather that’s on the way.
We’re getting our first ‘real’ winter weather this week, below freezing with sleet, snow, and ice. This year’s exceptionally heavy acorn crop will help the wild ones. My ‘urban squirrels’? They have a softie who stocked up on food for them. Foraging’s no fun in the cold; I suspect this cutie would agree.
Yes, they are still around, but today there is a hawk hanging around too, so I’m not going to put out fresh hazelnuts to attract the squirrels to be bait. I’ll have to be careful for a while.
