We saw a large group of scaups at the very beginning of May. They were swimming in a small man made lake in a park close to the river. As the river was still high I guess they preferred the more shallow water. We only saw them that once and at quite a distance but I was happy with the sighting.

The decline of hunting and better conservation of wintering grounds probably helps, I imagine.

They are a happy sight. We usually get quite a flock up in the upper pond where I live but, this year their numbers were far fewer. I’m glad you saw some up there!

I might have seen them once. Ellen (by default me) is always looking for ducks. We live in an important part of the migration path, have marshes, etc….. and yet few ducks 😳.

I’ve only see them a few times (and we don’t have gators😏).

Great photo, Belinda. The scaups tend to be more avoidant of people; not at all like mallards!
