I stopped to chat with a neighbour the other day and asked her if she had seen many bees in her garden. Not too many, she said but plenty of rabbits. On our walk today we came across this young cottontail who seemed to be enjoying the flowers. I wished it had turned in my direction but it still gave me some good photo opportunities.

I’ve seen a few but really not many since the rhododendrons bloomed in early April and they were busy collecting from them.

I think that depends on the provincial legislation as to what’s allowed. Sprays that affect bees or other “good” insects are under strict regulation here and only used in specific situations such as for infestations where health is at risk or so. You definitely could be right though.

I checked, the city does targeted spraying only. I guess the lack of insects is a troubling trend that I’ve noticed for the last several years.

Yes, I have also. Just last night I read that forest fire smoke has a huge effect on bees. They lose their ability to navigate properly and to smell the flowers, too, and with that goes their ability to effectively forage. They then try to stay inside living on their honey stores. The queen doesn’t reproduce and if the smoky conditions linger for too long, she will shut down parts of the hive as a conservation measure, too. I have no doubt that that’s happening here.

So sweet! I hope it grows up fast though, it knew we were there but didn’t run off. They’re a lot of ravens in the neighbourhood.
