AMERICAN RED SQUIRREL

Red Squirrel

This attractive squirrel with its reddish coat and white underbelly is larger than a chipmunk but smaller than the grey squirrel. They are very territorial and I often see them chasing the much larger eastern greys through the woods. They will stand their ground with people too, this little guy a case in point.

  2. You do such a wonderful job setting these close-ups and telephotos of wildlife with the backgrounds and colors of their environment in an artful way. I know a big part of it is naturally the critters’ using the surroundings of nature to their advantage/survival, but you also work their position really nicely.

  3. Feisty little critters, for sure. I read recently that if no red mates can be found, they will cross with grays, resulting in a hybrid. I think I’ve seen just such an example where I walk my dog. It is a gray squirrel with a rusty-red tail!

  5. I’ve never seen one of these in person. We don’t have these squirrels around here with those ears. Are those the ones with the ears that go straight up? So cute and great shot.
