EASTERN SCREECH OWL (THREE PHOTOGRAPHS)

I featured this eastern screech owl earlier in the month. In that series he was inside a tree cavity, on this day he was perched on a broken tree branch nearby. As this owl blends in so well with his surroundings, if I hadn’t been looking for him where I’d seen him before I would have missed him. All three photos had a tremendous colour cast caused by the leaves. In the first two, I used the Color Balance and Hue/Saturation in Photoshop to correct it. The colour cast was too pronounced in the third photo to fix, so I turned it into a black and white using Tonality Pro in Photoshop. As someone said, any day you spot an owl is a good day, this was an excellent day!

Beautiful creatures, love your images. I’m a light sleeper and at 2 am I was awoken by the sound of an owl calling, looked out of the window and it was perched on top of one of my trees. :>)

In India owls are considered bad luck! A friend gifted me 10 lovely silver and copper owls and I am being urged to get rid of them! they really cheer up the whole house!

You’re so lucky to be able to see and photograph these owls. You’ve done a great job of “fixing up” anything that needed it. Looks perfect to me.

Nice, but number 3 has an expression you don’t see very often on Screech Owls.

Absolutely gorgeous portraits, Belinda. If I have to pick a favourite, its the middle one, because the face is a little more open and there is an eye highlight – maybe the bird senses you – but then this is not the full-on reaction seen in the third shot. But I’d be very happy to have captured any of these images. Adrian
