I’m not sure who spotted who first but this duck was there for the taking. I believe it’s an American Black Duck although I’ve never noticed one with such a striking blue patch before. I was struck by his cool, calm and collected expression!

  4. Nice shot, I too prefer the colour. Guessing it’s a hybridized Black Duck/Mallard Duck. That would explain the blue patch.

  5. It is indeed an American Black Duck.
    The blue patch is a distinctive field mark.
    The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a great identifier, powered by the Macaulay Library, the world’s largest repository of avian images and sound recordings.
