WHY SO SERIOUS, HERON

Young Heron
This juvenile Black-crowned night heron was a fair distance from me and very high up a tree. I had to crop the picture quite a bit and when I did I noticed its stern expression. It’s a common look for this stocky heron and one that never fails to make me laugh.

  1. He looks very serious. I wonder what he’s thinking.

  2. It does look grumpy! Maybe he’s on sentry duty and would rather be sleeping? I always notice one in a bunch is awake and I wonder if its on sentry duty.

  4. I’m chuckling along with you, Belinda, always fun to spot one of these herons. I like this view with the pine behind him, too.

  8. Perhaps he is grumpy about what he has heard about the arrival of winter and trying to make most of the sun 🙂
