We didn’t see many Great Blue Herons this year and they tended to fish at quite a distance. I had to crop the photo but was rewarded by some pretty spectacular reflections and lighting.

Many years ago, I was walking along the docks at a marina and noticed a large object in the water a few feet away. I turned and there stood a Great Blue Heron just looking back at me. It didn’t fly way or move aside. This remains one of my favourite nature moments.
Nice pose – he looks ready to strike! We didn’t see very many this year either at the river, but there are two new rookeries in town at new beaver ponds, so perhaps the fishing was better there.

As you know, I enjoy herons and find this one regal looking too.

Thanks, Eliza! They seem to know where the good fishing spots are. We had few ‘big birds’ this year.

Let’s hope it is a one-off and not a trend. After the recent news about birds, I worry.

We had flooding in the spring and little rain this summer. Poor conditions for them.

One of the nicest birds to photograph. When they’re close enough, at least they stand still long enough to have their picture taken.
