These old boxwood rulers with brass fittings were used to measure bolts of cloth and date back decades. Along with the bright yellow measuring tape, the rulers form the subjects of my second studio series.

I remember my father had the wooden rule and in the sewing box my mother had the tape measure very similar to the one you have shown.
I believe that the rule was on hinges and opened up to give greater length.

The wooden rulers look like old treasures. Do they expand? I mean do the ends pull out? Surely they can’t measure bolts of cloth three inches at a time? The yellow tape looks familiar. I still have my mother’s yellow tape from “decades ago,” but the shiny covering is long gone. It is just cloth, looking a bit limp, but the numbers still show and I still use it. It’s very old.

I do love these old rulers and apparently that’s how they were used, they don’t expand. The cloth ruler is old as well, durable and still appealing.
