It was the mottled breast colour that got me wondering, and also the stripe by the eye (more pronounced on a black duck). Another possibility is cross-breeding between a mallard and a black duck which is very common in Ontario. But whatever it is, it’s a great photo of it.
It’s super clear. After looking at many of the images on the internet when I was trying to ID the duck, I realized more and more of what great quality your photo is. Well done!

I’ve been looking at a lot of pictures of both black and mallard and I think you are probably right (mallard).

Do you think it could be a black duck?

I wondered at first but I do believe itโs a mallard.

Lovely photo, Belinda. Although I cannot see the whole bird, it looks to me, too, like a male mallard, probably a juvenile.

Thank you, Jet. In late summer identification can be a bit tricky.
