Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America. We’re fortunate that they remain year round, On a grey winter day, seeing this lively colourful bird always brightens things up.
I see them in our Minnesota woods pretty reliably once or twice a summer–when we are able to be there for the summer, that is. They are among my very favorites. Maybe next summer again, hopefully.
We have the pileateds in our forest year-round too, and I can never ever get enough of these magnificent woodpeckers. This photo is truly wonderful, Belinda, capturing his boldness and beauty.

When they get into it, the chips of wood can really fly.
