The season for black-crowned night herons was quite short in our region last year. When we did spot a heron, it was usually in a clear sight line and often amazingly well posed and poised like this one was. Way to go Surfer Girl!

Interesting to see this heron. I notice it has the same 2 white feathers from it’s ‘neck’ as our Nankeen Night Herons here in Australia.

I hadn’t heard of the Nankeen Heron until now. I believe the feathers are breeding plumage.

The long, tassel-like feathers on the back of this bird are fascinating, it really makes me wonder how it evolved to display them such. Nice shot.

This is such a beautiful photo Belinda! I have never seen a black-crowned night heron, but I hear that they are very shy and hard to get a clear shot. Not so with yours! Amazing!
