STOPS ALONG THE WAY

GREAT BLUE HERON (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

I was using a long lens with a teleconverter the day I took these shots. During last year’s fall migration I had wanted to take some hooded mergansers that my regular telephoto lens just couldn’t capture. Walking on a path that borders the lake I caught sight of this Great Blue Heron close to shore. I don’t think I’ve ever been this near to one before and given where he stood and where I found myself, I couldn’t back up to get more of him in the shot. Pretty pleased with the way things turned out though.

Excellent shots! Having the subject too close is a problem that can be nice to have whenphotographing wildlife. You did a great job handling the situation, coming up with some very nice portraits.

Wonderful portraits – and you were very lucky indeed to get so close. Our similar Grey Herons are very shy. A

It’s something new to get such a close up look at a blue heron’s head. Turned out great!

Nice shots. I know what you mean about the long lens. The other day I was right in the middle of a disagreement between 2 Great Erets. I couldn’t even focus 😳. I want an 18mm -600mm !! Never carry anything else but a spare battery !!

It is so wonderful to be this close to a great blue heron, and it doesn’t happen very often. Fantastic photos, Belinda!

I have been thinking about getting a teleconverter myself. Were you using a 1 x or a 2x? Great pictures.

Thank you. I was using a 1.4 teleconverter (with a 1.4 you lose a stop of light). With 2.0 teleconverters you lose two stops of light and more often than not image quality is degraded, even when used at the optimum fstop for the converter lens combination.
