One day last summer while I was photographing some metallic bees I saw this unusual insect and changed my focus. I think it might be a type of fly. Can anyone shed some light?
You’re welcome. I’m sure it depends on where in Canada. They have been seems in Winnipeg a few times. As area climate becomes more tolerable for them up there, you may see them more and more.
As others have pointed out already, this Clearwing is definitely interesting. I have not actually seen this particular species of them – quite striking.

Almost looks like something related to dragon flies.

Hi Belinda, it’s a species of Clearwing Moth. A very quick look a google and it could be Black Clearwing (Synanthedon bibionipennis).
