I didn’t crop the photo because I wanted to keep all of the background. No rule of thirds here although the flower isn’t quite centred. I only noticed the aphids on the flower’s stem when I imported the photo. A lot of aphids but no ladybugs π

Be glad the aphids were on the flower stem and not you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and photographer. Although as a friend recently pointed out, many a camera club judge would pick this to pieces instead of enjoying it as it is.

As much as I embrace the thirds in almost all my shots, there is those times when breaking those norms produces a shot of equally pleasing composition. As I’ve progressed in my own personal photography journey, I find myself “focusing” more and more on the background as a compliment – you fought the photography law and you won today ha!

Itβs nice to display the environment/context that surrounds your subject. Iβm doing more of this as I go along. Thank you!

Hi Belinda
forget about the rule of 3, it’s actually Phi (Ξ¦), about 1,618 that means 1 to 1.618.
We like the proportions of your picture π The flower is beautifully photographed.

Isn’t it funny, as we are taking the photo, that we often don’t notice some of the details? It keeps the image honest and makes it interesting π

Sometimes it’s good to break some rules. And as you said, you see things you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. By having the background out of focus it gives a sense of distance in the photo.
