In the past you rarely saw ravens in the city but they’re here now, an hospitable environment for these birds. You often hear their deep “gronk” call as you walk along, both summer and winter. Although considered aggressive they are often mobbed by smaller birds protecting their nests.

I love the profile and purple and blue that you captured in its feathers.

Nice profile! I guess ravens are making a comeback, just like the raptors. Only a few years ago I saw my first pair and recently, I saw they had a youngster in tow.

Not a bird we have and I think I’ve only seen them in Maine (when Ellen finds a way to get me to the Cole white way).

We’re seeing them more and more. They’re highly adaptable and I guess the pickings are pretty good.

That’s a great picture, Belinda. Agreed, they’re often criticised for their aggressiveness but they’re so smart. When I lived in NWT I saw them planning, acting in concert and it seemed to me that they sort of “chatted” with each other, too. I actually haven’t seen any here but we have resident bald eagles who tend to keep gulls, ravens and hawks away.

Thank you, Lynette! These corvids are a clever bunch, as you describe here.

That’s a good picture of a raven. I made it bigger and could clearly see that hungry glint in his eye, as he perused his surroundings looking for baby birds to kill.
Yes, they are part of nature and they have to eat, but I guess I watched too much Walt Disney.

He had a couple of buddies with him but they looked pretty innocent. . They’re opportunistic feeders though 😏
