Wild Turkeys are not the prettiest of birds and can be quite aggressive during mating season. A local reserve closed its walking trails this past spring for several weeks when a trio of toms were harassing people. Conservation Officers had hoped to capture the birds and relocate them but they evaded capture. I took this photo at the same reserve in August, I kept a wary eye on this bird and waited for him to move along before I continued my walk.

Excellent shot, Belinda. Yeah, mating season can be pretty crazy… I’ve heard about owls, terns, deer, elk and moose attacking people. Best to keep your distance when the hormones are running high! 😉

I had heard that some birds could be aggressive but not the other animals you mention 😏

I’ve heard some crazy stories… a man stacking firewood attacked by a buck because the clunking of wood sounded like antlers clashing. Or the woman knocked off her feet by an elk in her yard… Moose attacking a truck… makes me scared to go in the woods during rut! 😀

If I could get a photo of a wild turkey like that, I’d be thrilled.

Have you ever watched them land in the trees? They are funny because of how they wobble around and seem to almost fall.

No I haven’t. I usually see them lurking in the woods 😏

Right, my folks had about 300 acres in northern lower Michigan years ago. While riding the quads, we would come upon a gang of them which sometimes flew into the trees to escape.

Wearing catcher’s shin guards would probably be a good strategy with these guys. 🙂 They always seem to have a wariness about them especially in November. 🙂

I might just get me a pair😊. You really appreciate how large they are when you see one on the path.

Fascinating how the color of Turkey’s feathers almost melts together with the tree bark. Nice capture.

With those spurs and that attitude, they are definitely the barbarians at the gate. I would rather deal with a goose or swan.

I always give them a wide berth. I often have geese sneaking up to me on a trail, I turn around and there they are 😏

I often have geese approaching me for food, but sneaking up from behind? I might think of finding another place to walk. Stalking geese – that’s new to me, and not in a good way.

They’re not really “creepy stalkers” although it can be startling 😏. The pathways in a section of the park are very close to the water so when the waterbirds come out of the water they’re feet from the footpath.
