It seems that few parts of town have escaped gentrification. Many of these older neighbourhoods are giving way to infills and condominiums. There is still a lot of the original character but I wonder for how long.
There’s frequently very little imagination (to say nothing of craftsmanship) in many of these buildings. I am generally in favour of densification where needed, but why construct stuff that looks like it fell out of the Soviet era? Ugh.
I was pleased to see that a condo under construction had retained the original facade of an old row house that had stood there before. It lent some charm to the new building.
The developers would probably call it progress or moving with the times. Thing is buildings from past ages were built with a flair that today would cost far too much and take far too long for anyone wanting a fast buck to consider. I would also suspect that there are very few craftsmen around with the skill to build as they did in the past.
I often walk past apartment blocks with art deco facades and admire the skill they took to construct. I suspect you’re correct about the lack of skilled craftsman today and chasing the fast buck.
It is indeed a real shame that old parts of the city, often with beautiful characterful buildings, have to make way for boring new construction. Fortunately, there are also buildings that are classified and to which no changes are allowed (except for restoration work in accordance with strict regulations).

We were just talking about this over the weekend. I still see a lot of character there – hope your town can hang on to it.

I think it’s an issue in a lot of places. Thanks, we have active citizens groups who put up the good fight 😏

It would be a shame to lose the character of the place. I hope it can be preserved for a long time to come.

I’ve seen that done as well. A little imagination can go a long way.

Change is not always for the best, well maybe for the few. My town is now being described as a wanna be Disney Land.

We have heritage buildings here as well but the definition is rather narrow, so many wonderful buildings are torn down.

There are a lot of political and race issues with Gentrification…

Those characterless high-rise buildings are a blight on any landscape!

If city planners gave more thought to what they’re approving and where, cities would be a lot more livable!
