I didn’t have to travel far to see this Easter Island statue. In fact it was the first of several replicas I saw in this downtown neighbourhood. I had to smile when I saw it peering over the grass as I approached the house.

I bet Thor Heyerdahl was blown away when he first saw that. Sorry – I got the title of the book wrong. It was called Aku-Aku, but was about Easter Island.

These human figures known as Moai were carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island between 1250 and 1500 AD. The originals are 4-10 metres tall!

It was a reading side trip I took after reading The Kon-Tiki Expedition way back when I was in grade seven and it was “required reading” that year.
