STOPS ALONG THE WAY

PILEATED WOODPECKER (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

I usually see pileated woodpeckers high up in the trees, rarely on the ground. As we were walking along we came across this bird excavating the bark of a fallen tree. It must have been full of insects because he continued on long after we had taken our fill of photographs and moved on.

I can count on seeing a few of these magnificent birds in Minnesota–when we’re able to be there, which has not happened this year. It’s great to see these through your eyes to remind me. There are no woodpeckers here in New Zealand.

I would love to see this bird. My son saw one in Kentucky.

Beautiful photos, Belinda I love seeing these guys around. We have a few hanging around our area and it’s a treat to see them when they visit.

What a wonderful sighting! I love that first pose with its head turned so funny to get to the goodies inside. I’ve never seen one of these. Thanks for sharing!

Another wood pecker common in our area. Each spring the young males will find something to drum on to establish how fine they are to the ladies. The louder the drum, the more the ladies want them. Enterprising young males have discovered ways to amplify their drumming. Tin roofs, satellite dish, metal doors and other human made objects are often employed. They start at dawn, in May, when the dawn comes very early. They always remind me of teenagers driving by in heir cars with the music up super loud and revving their engines.
