PILEATED WOODPECKER (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

I usually see pileated woodpeckers high up in the trees, rarely on the ground. As we were walking along we came across this bird excavating the bark of a fallen tree. It must have been full of insects because he continued on long after we had taken our fill of photographs and moved on.

METALLIC BEE

The metallic bee goes by several names, the least attractive being sweat bee which doesn’t do it justice. This one is a female, as its able to carry pollen on its back legs, the male is not. Their season is drawing to a close so it was nice to catch sight of just one more this year.

TRILLIUMS (THREE PHOTOGRAPHS)

Trillums

Three trilliums for this cold day in May.  Last weekend the weather was warm and sunny, today we’re having snow showers. Despite the weather, the flowers know it’s there time.  I took these photos in May two years ago.  I imagine they’re about ready to bloom this year too.

BLUE JAY

BluejayPeople with backyard feeders tell me they often have blue jays visit their feeders. Living in the city and having no backyard, my sightings are in the woods and far less frequent. The bird’s noisy call usually alerts me to its presence as it did so here. The jay stopped for a minute amid the fall colours.

SOLITARY DAMSELFLY

DamselflyI thought the season for damselflies was over for the year when I saw one a week ago, perched on a stem. We’re still seeing the occasional Monarch but this is the only damselfly I’ve seen in over a month. A wonderful sight indeed.

IN THE REEDS

Canada Goose 2The Canada Goose was swimming close to shore winding its way through the reeds. I usually try to get a clean shot of a bird but in this case I thought the reeds made for a more interesting and realistic photograph.

A NICE MIX (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

Violet and RoseDifferent flowers, the first ones from a garden, the second growing in the wild. They both have an untamed quality to them. The violet flowers reminded me of underwater plants you’d see moving in a sea current. The others were found along a path and I took the shot just as the wind was lessening.

A FINE MIX (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

Columbine & Wood PoppyThe Red or Canadian Columbine and Wood Poppy are wild flowers that grow in Eastern North America this time of year. I took these photos at the Wildlife Garden I mentioned in yesterday’s post. Between the birds and the flowers we’ll be visiting there as often as we can. We also stopped by our local nature reserve to see if it had reopened, it’s still closed due to high water levels. 😏

SPRING INTO FALL (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

Spring into FallSpring seems to be on hold in my part of the country. The nights are still below 0C although the daytime temperature is slowly rising. Until I see some spring flowers, I thought I’d feature some late season sunflowers. I appreciate their endurance and less than perfect beauty as the weather turns colder.

BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON

Black-crownI have featured this photo before in colour but thought it would lend itself nicely to black and white. That and the fact that it’s too early for photo opportunities like this. We had a snowfall yesterday, a little early for April Fools’ Day and for the return of the herons.

GREAT EGRET RETURNS

Great Egret 2This is the second in a series of photos I took of an egret taking some turns on a beaver lodge. Perhaps he was digesting his lunch. There are some big catfish in this lake although the high water level might have made fishing difficult. I was at a sufficient distance not to disturb him and happily he was in no hurry to leave.
