I usually see grackles near water or in trees, so I was surprised to see this bird walking along in the grass. I know people with bird feeders tend to dislike grackles as they will bully the other birds. I like them though and admire their keen eye and good looks (they also keep the insect population down).

Thanks very much, Eliza! It was a bit of a waiting game until it walked out of the underbrush.

We have a second Grackle species in the Lowcountry. The Boat-tailed Grackle. A wider tail, larger, and fearless. Never leave a plate of food unattended.

I’ve never seen one, only the Common Grackle.
They do like to help themselves too 😏

I have seen grackles in grass many times (and yes, many times in my garden trying to eat from the feeders). I finally put out overripe watermelon and other fruit for them and they left the feeders alone.

It is lovely for me to see a grackle – like putting a face to the name of a person one has heard of so often.

Gladly 😊. I think the name suits them, they’re noisy and gregarious.
